Best Practices on Partnerships between DMOs and Local Arts Groups Blog: Notes from the Chair | By: Daniel Fenton | Released: Mar 09, 2010 09:47 AM As you know, one of my platforms as chair has been to spearhead DMAI getting more involved with arts groups at the national and local levels. Recently Michael and I met with Randy Cohen, VP of Local Arts Advancement for Americans for the Arts, to talk about ways we can engage our memberships to work together more. We were very excited by the discussions, and as a result we agreed that both our organizations are going to invite chairs or executive staff to present at each others’ conferences in order to educated members about opportunities. I’m so excited about this because it’s been my personal experience as CEO of Team San Jose that these partnerships can really strengthen a DMO’s position within the community and their brand as well. For example, I’m very active in several arts boards in San Jose, and have worked to help create and support the development of signature events that reflect our unique community -- such as ZeroOne – where art meets technology, Cinequest Film Festival, which showcases maverick, innovative filmmakers and First Fridays gallery nights in our SoFA district (South of First Area). Helping these events develop and flourish has been critical to our DMOs ability to promote San Jose as a unique arts and events destination. It’s also strengthened our relationships with business community that supports the arts, which has been great for us as well.
I’d love to hear about successful partnerships your DMO has done with local arts groups, and how your organizations and destination have benefited. We partner closely with our arts organizations and I have been active in Florida's cultural & heritage tourism product development. We partnered with Ringling College of Art and the Sarasota Architectural Foundation to create Tour Sarasota Architecture, a driving tour of the unique mid-century modern architecture found in this area. Most recently we have been in a partnership with the Ringling Museum of Art here in Sarasota and the Baryshinikov Arts Center in New York to create the Ringling International Arts Festival here in Sarasota. Now we are partnering with our neighboring Bradenton Area CVB and both counties' arts councils to create a fringe festival. When we've gotten past the funding fights, and established true partnerships, we've enjoyed amazing success. CVB & Arts ResponseBy: Daniel Fenton | Posted: Mar 10, 2010 04:31 PM Thanks Virginia! This is exactly the kind of movement I’d like to see with many DMOs nationwide. I think many DMOs take a more reactive role to promoting the arts rather than actively engaging to help create those signature events that make their destinations more competitive. I love your point about moving beyond parochialism and figuring out how to create true partnerships with other communities that make everyone successful. I’d love to hear from other DMOs on how they’ve been able to create this paradigm shift in their destinations. |
